Western Front

The US 1st Army relinquishes command of the 101st Airborne Division, which is to return to England for rest and training.

The VIII Corps makes substantial progress southward toward the Ay and Sèves Rivers as enemy opposition diminishes. The 8th Division, in the center, overruns Hill 92.

The VII Corps makes limited gains toward Raids, on the Carentan-Périers road, and toward the Les Champs-de-Losque crossroads against strong resistance.

The XIX Corps continues its attack on St Lô, moving in slowly. The 30th Division is still held up in the Pont Hébert area. The 35th Division makes negligible progress north of St Lô. The 29th Division advances its right flank (115th Infantry) to the villages of La Luzerne and Belle-Fontaine, northeast of St Lô, but the 116th Infantry is practically halted on a ridge leading west to St Lô.

In the V Corps area, the 2nd Division, against light resistance, finishes clearing all its assigned objectives in the Hill 192 area and gains firm control of the highway to St Lô from Bérigny to La Calvaire.

The British 2nd Army, on this day, is largely engaged in regrouping.
