Western Front

In the US 1st Army area, the VIII Corps continues to make slow progress southward on the west flank of the army. The 82nd Airborne takes Hill 95, overlooking La Haye-du-Puits from the northeast, where it remains until pinched out by the 79th and 90th Divisions on its flanks. The VII Corps opens an attack to the east of the VIII Corps on a narrow front between the swamps of Prairies Marcagéuses and the Taute River. The 83rd Division, in action for the first time, leads off toward Périers but meets firm resistance that makes its progress negligible.

In the British 2nd Army's I Corps area, in preparation for an all-out assault on Caen, the Canadian 3rd Division seizes Carpiquet but is held up short of its airfield for some time by the German defenders. In the VIII Corps area, the 43rd Division is attacking northeastward astride the Odon to ease the pressure on the I Corps.
