Western Front

In the US 1st Army's VII Corps area, organized resistance at Cherbourg ceases during the morning when Brig-Gen Robert Sattler, deputy commander of the Cherbourg fortress, surrenders the arsenal to the 47th Infantry, 9th Division, after the Allies broadcast an ultimatum. The 4th Division takes over the garrisoning of Cherbourg. The 22nd Infantry, 4th Division, overruns the Maupertus airfield an quickly clears Cap Lévy. The 9th Division prepares an attack to clear Cap de la Hague. Advance engineer units arrive at Cherbourg to restore facilities there.

In the VIII Corps area, the newly arrived 83rd Division takes over defensive positions on the left flank of the corps held by the 101st Airborne Division.

In the British 2nd Army's XXX Corps area, the 49th Division gains Rauray and holds it against a strong counterattack. The VIII Corps secures a small bridgehead across the Odon near Baron, bypassing resistance in the Grainville-sur-Odon region.
