Western FrontIn the US 1st Army area, the VII Corps closes in on Cherbourg. While the 9th Division's 60th Infantry clears the northern flank, the 47th and 39th Regiments move in on the city, the 47th toward the Equeurdreville fort and Redoute des Fourches and the 39th toward Octeville. In the 79th Division zone, the 314th Infantry overruns La Mare à Canards and pushes toward Fort du Roule, while the 313th, to the right, keeps abreast and takes the Hamdinvast region, far to the rear. The 12th Infantry continues to make the main effort of the 4th Division. Reinforced by a battalion of the 22nd, the regiment overcomes strong resistance in the Digosville area and enters Tourlaville unopposed at night. The 8th Infantry reduces strong positions east of La Glacerie, on the division's left. The 22nd Infantry, on the division's right, contains the enemy in the Maupertus area. Arriving on the continent is the 3rd Armored Division set to join the XIX Corps. |
