ItalyThe British V Corps, holding the Adriatic coastal sector, finds that the Germans are withdrawing and moves forward. In the US 5th Army's VI Corps area, the 133rd Infantry, leading the 34th Division's pursuit up Highway 1, encounters delaying opposition south of Tarquinia. The II Corps to speed the advance, commits 2 TFs ahead of the 85th and 88th Divisions--TF Howze on the left and TF Ellis (91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, reinforced) on the right. Forward elements get to within 6 miles of Viterbo, before the corps is halted in order to give the South African 6th Armored Division the right of way. The shift of the boundaries of the 2 armies to the left greatly narrows the zone of the 88th Division. In the British 8th Army's XIII Corps area, the South African 6th Armored Division makes rapid progress toward Orvieto on the left flank. East of the Tiber River, the British 6th Armored Division runs into enemy positions extending westward from Monte Maggiore and is held up at Passo Corese. During the night infantry is placed in the lead. |
