In the US 5th Army area, the VI Corps launches a major offensive toward Colli Laziali, forestalling a planned enemy counterattack to reduce the Anzio bridgehead. On the left, the British 1st Division and the 1st Armored Division make a main effort up the Albano road. After sharp action, beginning the night of the 29th, of the 24th Guards Brigade to secure a line of departure for the 3rd Brigade, the 3rd Brigade jumps off in the afternoon and takes the heights just south of the Campoleone overpass. The 1st Armored Division moves left of the Albano road to attack Colli Laziali from the west. On the right flank of the VI Corps, the 1st and 3rd Ranger Battalions spearhead the attack of the 3rd Division toward Cisterna, moving forward quietly, during the night of the 29th. Spotted by the Germans at dawn, the Rangers are ambushed and virtually destroyed within 800 yards of Cisterna. Meanwhile, efforts of the 4th Ranger Battalion and the 3rd Division to relieve the ambushed Rangers are costly and futile. The 504th Parachute Infantry makes a diversionary attack along the Mussolini Canal but stops short of Highway 7.
In the Brisith X Corps area, the 168th Infantry of the 34th Division repels strong enemy counterattacks west of the Rapido.
In the FEC area, the 2nd Battalion of the 142nd Infanty, US 36th Division, begins an attack toward Manna Farm.
