  • 348th Fighter Group P-47s attack barges and ground targets at Talasea.
  • V Fighter Command P-40s attack the Gasmata area.
  • More than 170 Japanese Navy carrier aircraft—40 B5N 'Kate' dive bombers, 45 D3A 'Val' dive bombers, 82 A6M Zeros, and 6 reconnaissance planes—are ordered to depart their ships to bolster the 373 Japanese Navy and Army aircraft already at Rabaul. All the carrier aircraft will arrive by November 1.

  • During a mission to the Rome area, 27th Fighter-Bomber's 522nd Fighter-Bomber Squadron A-36s down 6 Bf-100s between 1100 and 1130 hours.
      • During an afternoon engagement over Civita Castellana, A-36s from the 86th Fighter-Bomber's 526th Fighter-Bomber Squadron down 3 Bf-109s.

      In the US 5th Army's British X Corps area, the 46th and 7th Armored Divisions begin their attack on Monte Massico and Monte Santa Croce. In the VI Corpa area, the 168th Division of the 34th Divsiion finds that the enemy has abandoned the hill south of Ailano.

      In the British 8th Army area, heavy rainfall forces Gen Montgomery to postpone the planned attack by the XIII Corps along the axis Vinchiaturo-Isernia. The V Corps continues unsuccessful efforts to expand the Trigno bridgehead in [rarrrarr | rarrrarr2]
