Sicily

Truscott's 3rd Infantry Division reaches the Zappulla, repels a German counterattack and crosses the river. The German defense stiffens and the Americans are halted short of Naso Ridge. Meanwhile Patton orders a second amphibious assault fot the night of the 10th in order to speed up the advance. The landing force weighs anchor at 6:00pm. The amphibious force (the 2nd Battalion of the 30th Infantry, reinforced by artillery and tanks), with close air and naval gunfire support, lands 2 miles east of Capo d'Orlando and establishes positions astride main highway and railroad.

Units of the US 9th Division driving along Highway 120 toward Randazzo reach the road junction north of Bronte and secures a foothold across the Simeto but is again held up by stiff German resistance.
