Eastern Front

SOUTHERN SECTOR

Leading elements of the 4th Panzer and 6th Armies link up at Stary Oskol, but the Soviets evade their trap. The 40th Army, XVII, IV and XXIV Tanks Corps retreat toward Voronezh. To halt the expectd German thrust toward Moscow, which the Stavka still believes is the German intention, the 6th and 60th Armies are allocated from the Stavka reserve to Golikov's Bryansk Front. Both armies are to deploy north and south of Voronezh and prevent the Germans from gaining a staging post for the attack toward Moscow.

On the Khersonnes peninsula, the 11th Army begins the task of destroying the remnants of the Sevastopol garrison. Fighting is severe as the Soviets fight to the bitter end.
