Australia, Home Front

In the 'Australia First' conspiracy, 3 men and a woman are arrested at Perth for plotting to set up a Fascist Government, to negotiate peace with Japan, to assassinate politicians, Communists and Catholic priests and sterilize the Jews. 2 of the men are sentenced to prison on June 29.

Panamanian Tanker <i>Persephone</i> Sunk
The Panamanian tanker Persephone is sunk by U-593 with the loss of 9 of her crew. The bow of the Persephone was broken off and towed to New York by salvagers. 21,000 barrels of oil were saved, and her midship house was removed intact and placed on the tanker Livingston Roe. The rest of the wreck was blown up by the Coast Guard after being struck more than once by passing vessels.

Eastern Front

SOUTHERN SECTOR

The Soviet forces in the Izyum pocket attempt to bulldoze their way to the east. Bitter fighting with the III Panzer and LI Corps on the eastern face of the pocket proves fruitless as the German lines hold fast.

The unarmed US freighter Alcoa Carrier (5588t) is torpedoed and shelled by U-103 and abandoned. None of her crew are lost.

Part of the Chinese 38th Div manage to reach India from Burma.

Midway

Two light carriers and 2 cruisers leave port in Hokkaido to carry out diversionary raids in the Aleutian Islands. US forces are also on the move with submarines leaving Hawaii for patrol positions related to the Midway operation.

Pacific

  • The US submarine Drum (SS-228) sinks the Japanese merchant cargo ship Kitakata Maru (2174t) east of Nojimazaki, Honshu, Japan.
  • The US submarine Pompano (SS-181) sinks the Japanese merchant tanker Tokyo Maru (902t) about 70 miles west of Naha, Okinawa.
  • The US submarine Tautag (SS-199) sinks the Japanese transport Shoka Maru (4467t) about 385 miles southwest of Ulithi, Carolines.

South China Sea

The Japanese repair ship Asahi, an old battleship, is sunk by the American submarine Salmon (SS-182).
