Eastern Front

There is heavy fighting along the Volkhov as the 2nd Shock Army launches repeated attacks. Bitter fighting also rages in Kholm as hand-to-hand battles sweep the ruined streets of the town.

The VI and XXIII Corps link up, cutting the Kalinin Front in two. The 22nd, 30th, 31st and part of the 29th Armies are north of the Volga, while the 39th and the remainder of the 29th, together with the XI Cavalry Corps are encircled south and southwest of Rzhev, between Chertolino and Sychevka. The 22nd, 30th and 31st Armies launch strong attacks, almost succeeding in isolating Rzhev. To the south, the 2nd Panzer Army draws closer to Sukhinichi.
