Eastern Front

A lull settles over the Volkhov as the Soviets regroup. To the south, the 3rd and 4th Shock Armies continue to attack the 16th Army, but only make slow progress.

The XI Cavalry Corps (3 cavalry and 1 guards motorized divisions and 6,000 men) pass through the gap created by the 39th Army, pushing south toward Vyazma. Simultaneously, the 29th Army launches new attacks upon Rzhev but fails to enter the town. To the south, the 10th Army takes Kirov and pushes on to Zhizdra and Chiplyavea. The 216th Infantry Division continues to hold at Sukhinichi.

The counterattack by the 6th Army around Kharkov inflicts heavy casualties upon the 21st and 40th Armies, while in the Crimea the 44th and 51st Armies try to break the German line near Feodosia, albeit unsuccessfully.
