North AfricaBoth panzer divisions retire independently to Bardia for fuel and ammunition. At dawn Brig Lindsay M. Inglis attempts to lead the 4th New Zealand Bde to El Duda. His advance is checked by the German 88mms which destroy 7 Matildas. While the attention of the Germans is focused on the 1st Escarpment which is directed eastward, about 1210 they are engaged from the northwest. With heavy artillery fire and a misdirected British bombing attack, the Tobruk garrison finally captures El Duda to come within 2 miles of the positions secured by Inglis. Darkness brings no respite. Brig Harold E. Barrowclough's 6th New Zealand Bde keeps attacking that part of the 2nd Escarpment remaining in Axis hands. They meet savage resistance from the German anti-tank guns causing heavy casualties.
