Eastern Front

NORTHERN SECTOR

Klykov's 52nd Army infiltrates the German lines and succeeds in encircling elements of the XXXVIII Corps at Malaya Vyshera. Despite fierce counterattacks, the Germans are unable to break out, bitter street fighting raging as the Soviets press into the town.

Lake Ladoga freezes, enabling the Soviets to move supplies across its surface into Leningrad.

CENTRAL SECTOR

The 3rd and 4th Panzer Groups and the 9th Army continue to crush the Soviet defenses to the north of Moscow. Kluge's 4th Army attempts to cross the Oka River but encounter fierce Soviet resistance. On the southern wing, the 3rd Panzer Division of the XXIV Panzer Corps crosses the Upa southeast of Tula and launches attacks the 3 left flank divisions of the 50th Army, while the 4th Panzer Division pushes toward Dedilovo. At the same time the Soviets counterattack from Venev, breaking the German lines. Panic ensues as the German position collapses, and it seems likely that a rout will develop. Guderian hastily rallies his force, counterattacking with the XLVII Panzer Corps. Pushing from the south into the deep right flank of the West Front, the XLVII Panzer captures Yepifan, while the LIII Corps moves toward the Don.

SOUTHERN SECTOR

As fighting rages in Rostov, the 37th Army continues to counterattack. Progress is slow, prompting Halder to urge the 17th and 6th Armies to move units forward to relieve pressure upon the 1st Panzer Army.
