Eastern Front

FINLAND AND NORWAY

The 23rd Army pulls back to the 1939 Russo-Finnish border after a running battle with the Finnish Southeastern Army. The Soviets attempt to hold the Finns on the line of the Sestra, bitter fighting raging along this position throughout September.

NORTHERN SECTOR

The 20th Motorized Division launches a counterattack and regains control of Mga. Leningrad is brought under direct artillery fire as the Germans dig in south of the city.

CENTRAL SECTOR

The 16th, 19th and 20th Armies launch concerted attacks along the Dukhovschina-Yartsevo line in an effort to penetrate through to Smolensk. Nine days of bloody fighting ensue.

There is heavy fighting at Trubchevsk as Eremenko's Bryansk Front attacks the XLVII Panzer Corps. The threat to the left flank of the 2nd Panzer Group compels Guderian to commit his reserves. After a relatively short period of rest, the XLVI Panzer Corps is thrown into the battle. Schweppenburg's XXIV Panzer Corps extends its bridgehead around Novgorod-Seversky.
