Battle of the Atlantic

U-567 sinks the British steamer Fort Richepanse (3485t) 450 miles southwest of Bloody Foreland with the loss of 41 of her crew. 22 survivors are picked up by the Polish destroyers Garland and Piorun.

The Russians counterattack in the Smolensk sector.

NORTHERN SECTOR

Pitched battles are fought south of Leningrad, while fighting along the Volkhov intensifies as the I and XXXIX Panzer Corps press the 48th Army back.

CENTRAL SECTOR

The XXIV Panzer Corps pushes south from the Desna, leading units capturing Krolovetz after a brief struggle.
