Air Operations, Europe

There are RAF night raids on Berlin and the Taranto naval base.

Battle of the Atlantic

  • U-137 sinks the British steamer Cape St Andrew (5094t) west-northwest of Aran Island with the loss of 15 crewmen. 53 of the crew are picked up by the British tug Salvonia and landed at Greenock.
  • The British steamer Empire Wind is sunk by German bombing in the North Sea. The entire crew is picked up by the British destroyer Arrow.
  • The British tanker Leon Martin (1951t) sinks on a mine southeast of St Anthony Point near Falmouth with the loss of 16 crewmen.
  • The Belgian steamer Anvers (4398t) from Convoy WN-35 is sunk by German bombing about 5 miles northeast of Rattray Head with the loss of 1 of her crew.

The Blitz

In the raid on London Willesden Yard is hit again. 502 wagons are shunted.
