Battle For France

June 30, 1940

Mussolini drives to Lanslebourg, in Maurienne, to congratulate the Italian troops who had fought on the Alpine front. On the way down from Mont-Cenis he notices, on his left, a fort that has refused to surrender and is still flying the French colors. This is the La Turra fort, some 9,000 feet above sea-level. Its garrison, commanded by Sub-Lts Prudhon and Chandesris, consists of 9 NCOs and 41 Chasseurs and gunners. Though encircled by several divisions, they have repulsed all enemy attacks for ten days.

Mussolini gives orders for them to be freed, with the honors of war.
