Battle of the Atlantic

  • The British destroyer Grenville hits a mine and sinks off the Thames Estuary. Casualties are 8 dead and 73 missing, presumed dead. This is a result of the German minelaying operation the night of the 6th.
  • U-9 sinks the Swedish steamer Patria (1188t) in the North Sea with the loss of 19 crewmen. Survivors are rescued by the Swedish steamer Frigg.
  • U-59 sinks the French steamer Quiberon off Great Yarmouth.

Finland - Winter War

Day 51

In northern Finland the Finns take up defensive positions at Märkäjärvi. The Finnish 9th Div currently fighting in the Suomussalmi-Raate sector is given orders to move south to Kuhmo. There is an unsuccessful Finnish attack against the positions of the Soviet 122nd Div at Salla.

Over the Karelian Isthmus 2 Finnish fighters engage 3 Russians bombers and shoot 1 down. 3 more Russian planes are shot down over other parts of the Isthmus.
